NEWS & NOTES OF INTEREST

STC announces sales study dates for all property classes
sold signThe State Tax Commission (STC) has ordered the use of single-year sales studies for 2010 for the residential class for all local units. County equalization directors, on behalf of their local units, may request an exception to this order. To request an exception, equalization directors must present compelling evidence to support the use of a two-year study. The STC reconsidered its original dates for the studies, and recently released the following sales study dates, beginning with 2010 equalization:

Two-year study: Oct. 1, 2007, through Sept. 30, 2009
Single-year study: Oct. 1, 2008, through Sept. 30, 2009

These sales study dates apply to all classes of property. The STC authorizes the use of a single-year study in the first year of an increasing market if a single-year study was used in the prior year.

DTV switchover coming June 12
tvTownship officials can help get the word out to residents about the upcoming digital television switchover. After June 12, analog television sets receiving free TV using an antenna will not work. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, many households--likely those headed by senior citizens, low-income persons or those with disabilities--are unaware of these coming changes. Click here to download a resource toolkit from the Department of Commerce. Officials and residents can also visit www.dtv2009.gov/ or call (888) 388-2009 for additional information.

NEW ORV Regulation Web page offers ordinance information
ORVPublic Act 240 of 2008 amended Part 811 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to allow eligible counties and townships in those counties to authorize the operation of off-road vehicles (ORVs) on roads. Beginning July 17, 2009, a township may adopt an ordinance to close roads to ORV operation. MTA's newly created Web page, www.michigantownships.org/orvregulation.asp, offers links to ORV laws, as well as various county ORV ordinances.
